Eating Yourself Sick
By Susanne Mornan-Vaughan

Until about 4 years ago, I never really bothered about what I ate and drank. Apart from shellfish and pork, my selection criteria was 'eat it if it tastes good!' I have always had excruciating period pains, which I attributed to heredity because my mother suffered from the same in her youth. In fact, most of my sisters had it too. Pain killers such as Neurofen and Feminax were useless. The only thing that gave me some form of relief was Ponstan, which I could only get on prescription. I also suffered from the 'sniffles' as I always had a running nose. I tried all the medicines that I could lay my hands on but found no cure.

In 1990, I gave up beef due to the incidence of Mad Cow's Disease. I always thought to myself, 'if you feel that cows meat is infected and not fit for human consumption, surely the same thing applies to diary products'. But as I enjoyed drinking lots of milk and eating cheese, I decided to ignore my thoughts and listen to the 'experts' who claimed that milk was safe.

A few years ago, my husband and I went to visit his grandmother and aunt in Canada. My husband's aunt and grandmother were very health conscious and after 3 weeks of observation of their healthy lifestyle, I think some of the 'good stuff' rubbed off on me.

When I returned to London, I decided to take action on my diet. My first quest was to give up red meat totally. Despite the fact that I no longer ate beef, other kinds of red meat such as goat meat and lamb remained part of my diet. My next quest was to stop drinking coffee, tea and cola based soft drinks. I had tea in my bottle as a child, in fact, one of my uncle's used to call me 'tea' (laugh!). This was really challenging for me but I did it anyway!

My final quest for this phase of action on my diet was to eliminate diary products, so out went cheese, milk and yogurt (my favorite).

It took a lot of will power and determination to make all these changes to my diet but I persisted nevertheless.

The results were amazing! My period pains have reduced drastically. I still get a few cramps occasionally but nothing a couple of Neurofen cannot solve! The sniffles have vanished! I always had a feeling that milk was the cause and proceeded to test this. After giving up milk, I conducted a test and tried it again over a period of 3 days and my sniffles returned. Enough said!

After this life changing experience I can testify to the fact that my diet has had a significant impact on my health and general well being. There are a lot of illnesses in our society today and I can now confirm that some of the things we eat contribute to this.
