ÌListenŒ to your body by Fennie Lowe
So, you are not quite yourself but you
don't know what's wrong. Life goes on
as usual and you can't quite put your
finger on it. Suddenly, it hits you... and
you are forced to stop and listen to
what your body has been trying to tell
you all along. This is what happened to
me...
Let's just say that being told by the
orthodox medical profession after
several months that we don't really
know what's caused it and we can't fix it
wasn't the most joyous time in my life.
However, that provided the call to
action I needed. Six weeks of
hospitalisation gave me time to think.
Daily visits from my roommate and mum
were the highlight of each day while
undergoing a variety of uncomfortable
and sometimes painful topical
treatments. If doctors couldn't fathom
it out, it became crystal clear that I
would have to look within myself.
In medical terms, it became clear that
I'd experienced a nasty bout of
psoriasis, triggered by a streptococcal
throat infection had left me run-down.
I'd split up with a long-term partner and
things weren't happy at home - times
were turbulent to say the least. In
addition, allergy testing highlighted a
severe reaction to tomatoes and a
sensitivity to the entire nightshade
family of plants e.g. potatoes and
peppers. Action was needed, along
with reflection.
I set about researching my options.
Friends and family found articles and
books and asked around for similar
stories. I discovered Dos and Don'ts as
well as the need for balance and
harmony. A revelation came from a
quote by Hypocrates, who said ' it's all
to do with what you eat and drink, how
you breathe and what you think'. It
made sense. Dietary adjustments had
to be made, as my system couldn't cope
and was overloaded. I fasted and

eliminated nightshades from my diet
and embraced herbal teas as well as a
positive outlook. I consciously took
quality time for myself by concentrating
on what I consider to be the important
things (to get things back into
perspective).
In addition, I realised how unhappy I'd
been. With the wonder of hindsight,
scolding myself for not having been able
to see it at the time. This is a natural
reaction and one we are likely to
continue repeating until we unlearn
that behaviour. The unconditional
support of loved ones made the
difference for me.
'You cannot teach a man anything, you
can only help him to find it in himself'
is certainly true. We can choose to be
happy - or choose not to be - and that
directly affects our health and wellbeing.
I have learnt many lessons from the
events related here. From time to time
I cross paths with others for whom
physical or emotional symptoms are
masking underlying causes. I have
'happened' to meet people in railway
stations, airplanes and in the office
etc. Relating my story in some small
way helps them to help themselves, to
find strength and purpose when À it
appeared to be stacked the other way.
Health is multi-faceted. Treating one
area of our lives without checking the
knock-on effects can only ever be a
partial solution. Happiness, harmony
and balance are the rewards we reap
for getting it right.
