Does Goal Setting Work? by Susanne Mornan-Vaughan
Most people try to set goals for
themselves in one way or another. I
have discovered that many people
believe that by just saying things like ÌI
want to change my job this yearΠor I
want to go on holiday this yearΠis a
form of goal setting. But is this enough?
Why is it that most people who set goals
at the beginning of the year give up
before their goals are actually
accomplished?
Could it be because they did not have
clearly defined goals and a realistic plan
to achieve them?
I feel that it is very important to have
goals for every aspect of our life, body,
mind, spirit, career, relationshipsþ you
name it, we should have a goal for it!
In fact, we should not just have goals
but a clear action plan to achieve what
we have set out to do.
To master goal setting and the
achievement of what you have set out
to do, it is essential to apply the
S-M-A-R-T criteria and here is what I
mean:
Specific À each goal needs to clearly
state what is to be accomplished in
terms of the end result e.g. I am going
to loose weight.
Measurable - each goal needs to clearly
state the level of accomplishment that
will make up the end result e.g. I am
going to loose 1 stone.
Actionable À each goal needs to show
action, and be compelling. E.g. I am
going to loose 1 stone by going to the
gym twice a week and eating more
healthy food.
Relevant À each goal needs to be linked
to an overall vision or plan for your
achievements in life e.g. I am going to
loose 1 stone by going to the gym twice
a week and eating more healthy food so
that I can look and feel my utmost best.
Time-bound - each goal must state an
end result to be accomplished in a
specific time period e.g. I am going to
loose 1 stone in 2 months by going to
the gym twice a week and eating more
healthy food so that I can look and feel
my utmost best.
The S-M-A-R-T way provides a more
structured approach to goal setting,
that acts as a guide along your journey
to achievement. Goal setting the
S-M-A-R-T way does not mean that you
will always meet your deadlines or
accomplish your goals. It is your
determination, perseverance and
hunger for achievement that will
guarantee success.
Written goals have a way of
transforming wishes into wants;
cant's into cans; dreams into plans;
and plans into reality. Don't just
think it, ink it! Author: Unknown
