Striving for the dream by Yaa Adjaye-Kufuor
I believe in setting goals and living my dreams.
I have always dreamt of setting up my own company. Despite working for
some of the best blue chip companies in the world, I never lost sight of this
goal. I kept my dream alive by setting goals and making plans to achieve
them year after year until 4 months ago when I finally plucked up the
courage to leave my job and take the plunge. I decided to set up a
Consultancy that specialises in developing concepts for using the mobile
phone for interaction with consumers and marketing. Some of my friends
thought I was crazy to leave behind an excellent job opportuntiy in an
international organisation, considering the current state of the economy.
This did not phase me, as all the goal setting and planning over the years
conivinced me that this was the perfect time to take action.
Starting your own business takes a lot of perseverance and endurance. It
takes you out of your comfort zone - no more monthly pay cheque and
stringent budgeting! Nevetheless, I am having a great time doing this and
IŒm loving it as I do not answer to anyone, my life and my destiny is in my
control.
This experience has made me even more aware of the importance of image.
There is no ÌoneŒ or ÌrightŒ image. Different situations require different
image. The nature of the work that I am engaged in demands that I behave
and look professional at all times and consequently, my attire should reflect
the same. I always wear a suit for business. Its surprising to see the impact
that this has on the way I am perceived by clients who frequently say that I
emanate profressionalism. DonŒt be mislead. I know that this is not only
because I wear a suit but because I am competent at what I do.
There is a time and place for everything. When I am not working, I usually
wear a pair of jeans and a T-shirt because it is suitable for informal
environments. While you may dress for yourself, you should be aware of the
impact that this may have on your target audience and others within your
vicinity. It could either work for or against you!
Image is not just external but internal À how we feel about ourselves . Image
is a package made up of what we say, how we carry ourselves, what we
wear and how we feel. You must not only act and look part but feel the part
as well!
When all is said and done, we should not judge a book by its cover because
all that glitters is not gold! While image is important, you still need to have
a vision, set goals and make plans to achieve what you want in life.
